Have you been consciously and intentionally building your personal brand?
Or have you let people make their own assumptions about you and your business?
Wikipedia says this about personal branding:
“Personal branding is the conscious and intentional effort to create and influence public perception of an individual by positioning them as an authority in their industry, elevating their credibility, and differentiating themselves from the competition, to ultimately advance their career or business, increase their circle of influence, and have a larger impact.”
Wikipedia
The words to note here are conscious and intentional because if you aren’t intentionally building your personal brand, your audience is doing it for you (and that you have no control over 😬.)
So, what are you to do?
Here are 3 things you must-do if you want to build your personal brand.
Step #1 -Own that you ALREADY ARE a personal brand.
If you are an online service-based business… and especially if you are a coach or a course creator, you are a personal brand.
Since your brand is what your audience thinks of your business. It’s the emotional connection they have to your business… and so, they are already deciding…You just aren’t in control of what they are thinking about it unless you start to get very intentional.
Step #2 -Lean into how important YOU are to the experience your clients have.
You are a coach. What people think of you is a major deciding factor on if they hire you or not. But if you aren’t showing them who you are through your website, your content, your voice and your photos… how do you expect them to know you well enough to trust you?
Step #3 – Recognize that it’s not actually about you.
Yes, it’s your expertise, your knowledge, and your framework that they are looking to hire. But before they’ve fallen for the idea of working with you… they are only concerned with themselves. And the more you show up and help them with the things THEY need, the more they are going to build trust with you. And that’s when they start caring about you. But not before.
Now you may be thinking I’ve lost my dang mind. Step 2 says I’m important and Step 3 says I’m not. WTF Becca???
I haven’t lost my mind, both statements are true. And this is where a major misconception on building a personal brand come from. It’s about you… but really… it’s not.
The key here is that it’s VERY important to show your face (yep, it’s true), to share your personality through your brand voice, vibe and content, but at the end of the day, you must keep your content focused on them.
Humans are selfish folk. We, first and foremost, care about ourselves.
So people are always thinking
“What’s in it for me?”
“How does this affect me?”
“Why do I care?”
If you don’t answer those questions above, they won’t give the slightest care about the fun things you share about yourself like your Oreo habit, or that you never have matching socks.🙋♀️
Those fun and personal things that bring out personality are like the buttercream frosting on the cake. It’s only important if you like the flavor of the cake being served in the first place.
If you HATE carrot cake, it doesn’t matter in the slightest that there is buttercream frosting on it, you still will not be having a slice.
Your personality, quirks, and personal shares are the buttercream frosting. The content you share, and the way you help them answer their questions… that’s the cake.
And you better be sure that you are serving the type of cake your audience wants before you focus on that frosting.
Now…. is it just me, or does anyone else want some sweets??
Hope that helps, now go get intentional!
