When you scroll through your niche on Instagram or LinkedIn, everyone is saying the same things. It’s the same 5-hooks-that-convert and the same tips carousels, all formatted the way every guru told you to. Your own feed fits right in, which is actually the problem.
You spend an hour on a post, it reads competently, and it could have been written by any coach in your space. Or honestly, by ChatGPT in about 30 seconds. The standard stand-out advice you’ve been given — better hooks, tighter niche, more consistency, sharper visuals — isn’t working the way it used to.
Every time you sit down to make something new, there’s a low-grade sense that the game has shifted underneath you and nobody handed out the new rulebook. AI is a big part of why, and the fix is simpler than it feels once you see what’s actually going on.
Why the old stand-out playbook isn’t working
The advice was never as strong as it seemed, even three years ago. Better hooks and tighter niches and more consistency have always been surface-level moves. What actually gave a coach an edge back then was that good-generic-advice was still scarce, so anyone pumping out competent content had a real advantage.
That’s the piece that changed. Generic-good-advice is now infinitely available. Any coach can generate 30 hooks in 30 seconds. Any coach can pump out “5 mindset shifts for high-achieving women” without lifting a finger. Any coach can copy the exact formulas everyone else is running, and most of them are.
Before we go further — using AI to help make your content isn’t the problem. How else are you supposed to run the business, make all the marketing, AND deliver the service to your paying clients? Use the AI. Everyone’s using it. That’s not what’s going wrong.
What’s going wrong is that when your content is exactly what AI produces on its own, you’re competing with a robot that’s faster than you and cheaper than you. That’s a game you’ll lose every time. The move isn’t to stop using AI. The move is to make sure whatever you’re posting has enough of you in it that AI on its own couldn’t have written it.
The one thing AI can’t replicate is you
Your differentiator was never the tactics or the framework. It was the specific human running the business — the way you think, the stories you have, the opinions you hold. Those are what made someone pick you in the first place, and what makes your best clients rave about you when they refer someone.
AI just made that dramatically more true, not less. In a market flooded with well-formatted, algorithmically-optimized content, the one thing your competition can’t copy from you is you. Not your niche. Not your credentials. Not your process. You.
Which means “showing up as yourself” isn’t a nice-to-have soft skill anymore. It’s the moat. It’s the entire reason someone picks you instead of another competently-run coaching business, or increasingly, instead of just asking ChatGPT directly.
How to stand out as a coach online now
Three moves, and they all point to the same thing.
Move 1: Audit what only YOU can say. Skip the abstract “what makes me different” question, because that one still lives in framework-thinking territory. The better question is: what specific opinions, stories, weird interests, and lived experiences do I have that no one else in my niche has? Your Ironman blowup at 43. The years you worked in a specific industry before coaching. Your particular take on the thing everyone in your niche gets wrong. That’s the raw material, and it’s already there.
Move 2: Wrap your tactics in your specific human context. You can still teach the macros, still explain the mindset shifts, still walk people through the imposter syndrome tools. What changes is that now the teaching comes wrapped in your actual life. Instead of a generic “5 mindset shifts” post, it becomes “5 mindset shifts I actually use in the mornings I don’t want to get out of bed.” Same tips, same list. But now the piece has YOU in it, and AI on its own can’t replicate that without knowing you.
Move 3: Say the things AI won’t. Take positions. Share opinions. Be specific about what you disagree with in your industry. AI defaults to safe and neutral by design, because it was trained to be agreeable. The moment you have a strong opinion and you’re willing to publish it, you’ve done something no AI on its own will produce. Your marketing gets memorable the moment you stop rounding your take down to what feels palatable.
If you want a shortcut for surfacing the specific stories and opinions that make you standoutable, the free Brand Stories guide walks through the ones worth mining first.
Quick reference: standing out in an AI-flooded market
- Generic tactics are commoditized. Following the standard playbook harder makes you more interchangeable, not less.
- Using AI isn’t the problem. Producing what AI already produces on its own is.
- Your unfair advantage is the specific human context AI can’t replicate — your opinions, stories, weird interests, lived experience.
- Wrap your teaching in your specific life. Same tips, filtered through your lens.
- Say the things AI won’t. Strong opinions instantly separate you from every algorithmically-safe post in the feed.
What this actually looks like in a piece of content
Pick a common coaching topic that’s been posted a thousand times. Say, “5 ways to overcome imposter syndrome.” Every coach in every niche has posted a version of this at some point. It’s the exact kind of tips list that used to be genuinely helpful back in 2021, when good-generic-advice was still a scarce resource and every list was a small giveaway to your audience.
Here’s the AI version:
- Reframe your inner critic
- Celebrate small wins
- Talk to a mentor
- Journal your accomplishments
- Remember everyone feels this way sometimes
Serviceable. Reads competently. Could have been generated by ChatGPT in 12 seconds and, honestly, it probably was.
Now here’s the you-in-it version. Don’t post all 5 tips at once. That’s the 2021 blog-and-carousel move, and it’s the exact format AI can generate on repeat. Instead, series it. Take each tip and turn it into its own post or 60-second reel, with a specific story or perspective layered into each.
An ADHD coach for late-diagnosed women in her 40s could take “reframe your inner critic” and turn it into a single 60-second reel: “‘Reframe your inner critic’ didn’t work for me for two years, because my inner critic is a very specific voice that sounds exactly like my mother. No amount of reframing was going to fix a nervous system pattern that started when I was eight. Here’s what actually helped.”
The next week she takes “celebrate small wins” and does the same shift — one story, one specific take on why the standard advice fails late-diagnosed women, one clear resolution. Then “talk to a mentor.” Then “journal your accomplishments.” Then “remember everyone feels this way.” Five pieces of content, five specific stories, one running theme.
Same source list. Different format entirely. Now the coach isn’t dumping information ChatGPT can generate in one giant post. She’s building a series that gives her followers a reason to hit follow, a reason to expect the next installment, and a natural bridge into her DMs or her website when they’re ready for the deeper work.
The same shift works in any niche. An executive coach for founders scaling past their first 10 hires could take a common tip like “how to give better feedback” and turn it into a series. One post: the specific opening line that lets you deliver hard feedback without watching the person shut down. Another post: the story of the key hire he lost because he softened the feedback too much, and what he’d do differently now. Another: the 3-word phrase that saves a difficult conversation from turning into a defensive spiral. Each one lands on its own AND builds toward the whole thing. By post 4 or 5, his ideal client is DMing him because she’s living exactly the season he’s describing.
The thing to notice about both examples is that the coach’s take was already there. The ADHD coach already knew why the standard reframe advice failed her. The executive coach already had the story about softening feedback and the specific opening line that changed things. Neither one had to become someone new or invent a fresh perspective — they just hadn’t done the work of connecting their specific human context to the tips they were already teaching.
That’s the specific work From the Brand Up is built to do — help you surface the opinions, stories, and takes you already carry, then layer them onto every piece of content you make so nothing you post could have been generated by AI on its own.
Not ready for the full program? Start with the free Brand Voice Workbook. It’s the observation work AI can’t do on its own — and once it’s done, it’s the base you feed to any AI so it stops sounding generic and starts sounding like you.

What actually shifts when AI stops being your competition
The obvious win is that your content stops blending in. That’s the smallest thing that changes.
The bigger shift is that content stops feeling like a race against an increasingly capable robot. When your marketing is layered with your specific opinions and stories and lived experience, AI stops being your competitor because you’re not competing on the tactics AI can do. You’re competing on the one thing AI can’t touch, which is being an actual specific person.
Content gets easier to make, because you’re not manufacturing “professional coach content” from scratch every time. You’re just sharing your actual take on the stuff you already teach. Your best clients start describing you back to you using your specific phrases, which means their referrals convert. Cold visitors stay long enough to book, because they’re finally getting a person on the page instead of an interchangeable brand.
That’s the actual transformation. Not more posting. More you.
If you’re tired of watching your content blend into the algorithm’s soup and losing the game to a robot that’s faster and cheaper than you, From the Brand Up is the room I built for this exact moment. It’s the 6-week group program for building the words, stories, and voice that attract the clients you actually want — made for coaches and consultants ready to excavate the specific human context that makes them un-replicable by AI. Waitlist gets first access, beta pricing, and the 10 seats before anyone else.
