As we know, there are a lot of things that are still a mystery to you as this is probably the first wedding you have planned. And many will wonder what to look for in a wedding photographer. Because of that, I have put together this FAQs page about much of the things you should know before hiring a wedding photographer, but most don’t know to ask.

What sets you apart from all the other wedding photographers out there?
My goal for your wedding has two parts. First, that you will have fun, and second that you will cry *in happiness* when you see your wedding photos. This day is about you and my main intent is to make a more memorable wedding for you by what I capture. I also, no longer dictate my coverage by how many hours I will be at your event. If you want tons of time to create beautiful images, then we can do that. Your coverage begins before your dress goes on, and ends after all the major wedding reception events are done… with some time for dancing photos too
Where most wedding photographers ask you to fit all the memorable moments into a neat 5-7-9 hour package, I look to be there through all the memorable moments, and then take off before people get too intoxicated, as no one needs those photos! This is what to look for in a wedding photographer.
How long have you been a photographer? And how did you become a photographer?
I fell in love with the art of photography in high school and realized that I wanted to pursue a career in it. I absorbed everything I could about it until I was accepted into a prestigious commercial photography program in Seattle, where I was able to solidify my knowledge not only of the camera but also of lighting and post processing. I graduated in 2005 and started pursuing a career in the commercial photography industry by working in product studios and on catalog, fashion and editorial shoots. I soon realized that I was more passionate about photographing real people going through real changes in life and capturing memories that they would treasure forever than I was about creating photos for advertising that will have a two month shelf life. I started photographing weddings in 2006 and fell in love with all aspects of the craft. Throughout each wedding day, I help create a more memorable wedding for you through the images I create so that years and generations later, the love and excitement can still be felt through your images. And once the wedding is over, I love coming back into your life as you make the next major step in life, with pregnancy and beautiful babies!
This all sounds wonderful but it sounds expensive. Are we going to be able to afford this?
Yes, it can be expensive. Do you agree that what is priceless tomorrow should be expensive today? Of all the portions of your wedding, you photos are what you use to remember all the details through the years. You won’t regret not having that lemon cake, but you will regret not having amazing images of the laughter, love and family who joined you.
Who do you work best with?
People who love each other, appreciate photography, and who will likely laugh at a poo joke….because, in photos awkward laughter just looks like laughter and I like to make people laugh!
I’ve never worked with a professional photographer before, how will I prepare?
Majority of my clients are in your exact same boat. This is the first time since their senior photos that they will have been photographed by a professional photographer and they have no idea what to expect. To help you calm the wave of questions in your head about how to make sure you look good and act natural and where the right outfit, I’ve written lots of fun articles that help with wedding photography and engagement photography concerns. So come on over and see how easy it really is.
Will you work with same sex couples?
Yes! I am very proud of our state and it’s acceptance of people no matter their personal life choices. I look forward to many same sex weddings in the future of Rebecca Ellison Photography.
Do you use a second photographer?
Depending on the wedding and wedding package, yes. For all weddings where there is not a second photographer, I bring an assistant to help with lights and be an extra hand to help.
Do you have backup equipment?
Um yes!!!!! Technology is fabulous, but anything with a battery has the possibility of failure. I always have a backup camera with me, lens and flash just in case something goes wrong. If I have a camera malfunction, you will never know as I will instantly have another camera ready.
Will you be the photographer day of if we hire you?
Of course! Personality is paramount, and you are hiring me not only for the style of photography that I provide, but because you expect to enjoy spending your entire wedding day with me around. That’s what to look for in a a wedding photographer, and if you have found that in me when booking, then I will be the one to see you on your wedding day. I am the vendor you will work most closely with throughout the day, so it is important that you trust in me and know that I am the person who will show up and capture your day as you expect.
Will you work with the vendors I have already chosen, or really want to work with?
Yes! The team of vendors you put together is a reflection of you and your preferences, and I love working with other vendors to make the dream of your wedding come true, whether I have worked with them before or not! If you are still in need of some great wedding vendors, I also have long list of industry favorites who I can refer you to.
Do you take credit cards and can we have a payment plan?
I take cash, check or credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, or Discover). To confirm your booking, I require a contract signed by both bride and groom, as well as a $750 retainer to hold the date. The remainder is due 30 days prior to the wedding, and you can pay that in payments scheduled up to the date the payment is due in full, or in one complete payment. It is up to you.
If you need some other type of payment plan, we can chat, and it is decided on a case by case basis.
For couples who like the idea of having their guests help with their wedding photography, I also offer a gift registry option.
Do you have liability insurance?
Absolutely
Do you take more than one wedding a day?
No. Just like you can’t be a bride/groom in more than one wedding a day, I can’t be a photographer in more than one wedding a day. It’s how I stay fresh to create amazing images for you.
This sounds like everything we’ve been looking for! What happens next to start the process?
If it turns out that I am still available for your wedding day, it would be great to meet with you and your fiancé personally to discuss the plans for your big day and to get to know each other. After all, the relationship you have with your photographer is the most important of all your wedding vendors. I not only want to meet your expectations, but to exceed them, and to do this effectively I would love to meet you in person! This will also be a great opportunity to show you our stunning custom-made albums and understand your concerns and preferences when it comes to hiring your wedding photographer.
May we contact some of your former clients to see what it is like to work with you?
Yes, you can also look at my client testimonials here right now. If you’d like a more detailed review, let me know and I can have one of my past brides contact you.
